9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

In the last “Testing the Opportunity Hypothesis” I discussed the opportunity of creating a product that can lower the temperature of a drink without changing the taste. After interviewing family friends, coworkers, and school friend, I was able to get a better grasp in understanding what the outside boundary consists of.

Who: The specific group that I was able to find that did not fall inside the boundaries is people who are vacationing or just traveling across the world. Reasons that were given include not wanting to bring things that were not necessary on their trip, having issues such as charging the device in another country, or losing the device as it can be put on a drink and someone will easily forget about it. Another person who does not fit in the boundary as well also consists of people who are saving money, as they can deal with room temperature drinks or use ice and deal with watered down drinks.

What: This need is different than that of others who may just want to drink because they are thirsty. My need prioritizes satisfying oneself in small events such as drinking a cold glass of water. This priority of satisfaction therefore shows that this need is only important if people are trying to satisfy themselves and have a better day. There is a difference between this and being thirsty, as people will always be thirsty but they can live without being picky and having cold drinks.

Why: The underlying need is not different for the group outside the boundary. Both people inside the boundary and outside the boundary have a need of wanting to be satisfied. This specific need is geared towards drinks and people's preferences. People will always want to have the ability to change their drink to a colder drink or warmer drink and this therefore makes the need universally applicable.

Who is in

People who want to go to the beach, picnic, or want to go on 1 day trips. People who want want drinks to have the correct taste.
Who is not

People who have long travels and people who are saving money as this is not a significant issue people will spend money on.
The need is to have drinks at a satisfying temperature.
The need is not the thirst of the person, as people can drink and survive yet not have the drink at the right temperature.
The need exists because people want to be satisfied, even in things that are as small as drinks.
This is not a need if people are looking for convenience in travel. If people prioritize convenience over pleasure then this is not a need.

The biggest finding I found from doing this assignment is that there are certain reasons why people would not be interested in buying this product. One of the reasons it that the inconvenience outweighs the satisfaction that a product like this may bring. A person may not want to be carrying around a handle that is going to change the temperature a drink everywhere they go and therefore would just rather have a drink at an incorrect temperature. Another interesting barrier preventing people from buying this product is that people will prioritize saving money over satisfaction, which is a significant enough reason not to get this product. Overall this assignment taught me to be more aware of reasons why people would not be interested in my product.

  1. Hi Santiago,
Great post! I think it is interesting that you found people would rather drink their drink at the incorrect temperature than carry the handle you described because of convenience. I still think the product is a great idea even if it may not be as convent as just drinking a warm drink. You did a lot of research on this product and who is inside and outside the boundary.
